Did Jack Murtha lie for his Purple Hearts?

On 12 May 2002, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that USMC casualty records show that Murtha was injured in "hostile" actions near Da Nang on 22 March 1967 and 7 May 1967. They added that "in the first incident, his right cheek was lacerated, and in the second, he was lacerated above his left eye. Neither injury required evacuation."

However in a 26 October 1994 article in the Uniontown (PA) Herald-Standard Murtha was quoted as describing two different injuries. "I was wounded in the arm with shrapnel from a bullet that hit the motor mount of a helicopter. In the other, my knee was banged up and my arm was banged up when a helicopter was shot down from a very few feet,"

Looks like he idolized Lurch before he met him.

Update [28 November 2006/3:30AM]:
Welcome visitors from Buckeye State Blog. Who knew that quoting the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Uniontown (PA) Herald-Standard, not to mention FrontPageMagazine, was "conservative dogma to denigrate and smear veterans service?" I want to thank you from the bottom of my 11B heart that I'm at the top of the list for November. It is truly an honor I will treasure for years to come.
