What if?

'What if' games are interesting because they are not limited to subject matter. For example, what if Lee Harvey Oswald’s aim was as bad as Oliver Stone would have you think and JFK lived on to see 23 November 1963 and beyond? Imagine what that decade would have been like instead. What if Mark David Chapman had tripped over an untied shoelace and happened to shoot himself rather than John Lennon on the night of 8 December 1980?

The one that has been talked about during the last week, albeit peripherally, has been what if Ronald Reagan had won the Republican nomination for President in 1976? Suppose he not only won the 1976 election against Mr. Peanut, but also the 1980 election against Mondull or whatever RAT loser they decided to offer up. With that in mind, do you think that he would have done next to nothing as the occupant of the Oval Office did during the Iran Hostage crisis from 4 November 1979 until 20 January 1981? Somehow I doubt that Reagan would have approved an operation such as Eagle Claw. First, the time elapsed between when the "Democratic Revolutionary Movement for the Liberation of Arabistan" captured the Iranian embassy in London, and the time that the SAS killed five of the six terrorists and rescued nineteen hostages losing only one was only six days. The British Prime Minister in 1980 was Margaret Thatcher. She and Reagan were very similar. I believe that Caspar Weinberger and GEN John Vessey Jr. under Reagan could have arrived at a better solution than did Harold Brown and GEN David Jones under Carter. One of the main problems with the plan designed by Brown and Jones is that they went out of their way to make sure that the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps were all involved in the operation without making sure that the proper logistical integration was in place.

Supposing then that Reagan served two terms and George H. W. Bush served two terms a conservative Republican was elected in 1992, as opposed to the Socialist adulterer who occupied the office from 1993 until 2001. I doubt that if terrorists were to have attacked the World Trace Center with a conservative Republican as President on 26 February 1993 it would have been treated as a law enforcement issue. There would not have been multitudes of attorneys dispatched to resolve a supposed "law-enforcement issue" rather than the clear danger to our national defense that this was which should have been handled and resolved by the intelligence and special operations community. I doubt that if a terrorist leader, who openly called for the destruction of this nation and was behind the bombing of embassies in Africa killing hundreds and wounding thousands, had been offered on a silver platter that we would have declined the offer, thus allowing him to pursue plans to murder thousands of our fellow Americans.

What if we learn from the mistakes of the past and elect officials who are more interested with the defense and security of our nation rather than struggling to construct a legacy to bask in at the Presidential Chicken Ranch and Massage Parlor in Little Rock?
